This is one of my favorite projects to date. We came up with an idea for an original magazine and designed several pages for it including a cover, an alternative story, and a jump spread based on an article we found interesting.

Role: Art Director, Designer, Editor, Photographer

Programs: Adobe XD, Adobe Lightroom, Adobe InDesign

Initial Thoughts.

The first idea I went with was going to be a magazine about dogs and focus on adoption. However, when working on it I felt very uninterested and uninspired so I decided to change to something that sparked more interest.

Process.

I wanted to create a magazine where I could use my own photography, so I thought about what I had a lot of photos of. At that point, I had mostly nature and landscape photos and several mushroom photos that I really liked. I started looking into articles about the forest and I found a really interesting one on how fungi communicate with each other and the rest of the forest. From there, I started to think of names for the magazine and wrote out several options and asked peers for their feedback, and eventually came up with theFloor. I also spent time sketching out ideas for the infographics and alternative story formats before attempting to create them on the computer.

Another large part of the process was choosing the photos I wanted to use in the magazine. So I went through my Lightroom and chose several that I thought would work and started playing around with the placement and thinking of different ways they could be used.

The last part of the project was to create a mobile design for the magazine which was my first experience with Adobe XD. I started by brainstorming and sketching out ideas for the article page, the menu, and some icons.

Result & Growth.

Since starting this program I had been excited to learn about publication design and this was my first experience with it. I really enjoyed the project and it just further solidified that I was interested in publication design. It was a great introduction to the field and the InDesign program.
